，上端像印章的纽或柄的侧面之形，下部像钤印后所呈现的纹样；从金或土，金表明其质为铜制，土表明用印须抑于泥土之上。《说文》正篆作壐，从土，爾声；籀文作璽，从玉，爾声，隶、楷字形从之。
【释义】《说文》：“王者印也，所以主土。”本义是印信。秦以前多以铜制成，尊卑通用，秦国称印，六国称玺。秦统一中国后只有皇帝的印称玺，一般人只称印。汉代略放松，皇后、诸侯王、王太后的印亦可称玺。

At the top it looks like the side of the handle or button of the seal, while the lower likes the patterns of the seal. The meaningful part is金( jīn,gold) which means it was made of bronze or 土(tǔ,soil). In 印Shou Wen Jie Zi 正in Seal script it was written as 壐(xǐ). The meaningful part is土(tǔ,soil) while the phonetic component is爾(ěr). In Chou time, it turned to be璽(xǐ). The meaningful part is玉(yù,jade) but the phonetic component is爾(ěr).
【original meaning】 Seals; it was mostly made of copper in Qin, which was used in the whole country. In Qin, it was called the seal, but in Warring States time it was 玺(xǐ).
