本義是棺材外面套的大棺。石刻文字亦从郭聲，作“槨”。

【析形】形声字。古文字形从木，𩫏声。
【释义】《说文》：“葬有木𩫏也。”本义指古代套于棺外的大棺。古代棺有两重，外面的叫椁，里面的叫棺。《庄子·天下》：“古之丧礼，贵贱有仪，上下有等。天子棺椁七重，诸侯五重，大夫三重，士再重。”
【shape analysis】It is the pictophonetic character. In ancient character it is related to 木 (wood)and sounds like the pronunciation of 𩫏.
【original meaning】 Referring to the outside coffin in which the smaller coffin was put. There are double coffins in ancient times, the outside one is called 椁(guǒ) and the inner one is called 棺(guān).
